Founded in 1903, the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) is the only state-supported university system in Puerto Rico. The University was comprehensively reorganized as a system by Law No. 1 of January 20, 1966. Law 1 (as amended) states that the University’s mission is to serve the people of Puerto Rico as a higher education institution, true to democratic ideals and within the framework of academic and scientific freedom.
